Plan Your Albania Route
Most renters pick one of three loops. The Riviera loop runs from Vlorë over the Llogara Pass to Himarë, Sarandë and Ksamil. Documents and Age Requirements
Bring your passport, your driving licence, and a credit card in the main driver's name. An International Driving Permit helps if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, and some suppliers ask for it. Drivers must be at least 21 and must have held their licence for a year. Drivers under 25 may pay a young driver fee at the desk. SUVs and vans can carry a higher minimum age.
Crossing Borders from Albania
Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece are within reach, but the supplier must give written permission at booking. Expect a cross-border fee, commonly €20 to €50, plus a Green Card for Montenegro. Allow time at checkpoints when crossing Albania's borders by car.

Drive on the right and belt up. Limits are 40 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on most roads outside towns, up to 90 km/h on some main roads and 110 km/h on motorways. Cameras work around Tirana and on the A1 motorway, and fines reach you through the supplier.

The alcohol limit is 0.01 percent, which means no drinks at all before you drive. Police run roadside breath tests. Fines climb with the reading. Phones must stay hands free. Keep your licence, passport, and rental agreement in the car for checkpoints.
Tolls and Fuel Stations
Albania has almost no toll roads. The main one is the A1 Rruga e Kombit toward Kosovo, where you pay a small fee at a booth. Fuel stations take cards on main roads, but carry cash in villages. Check petrol or diesel before leaving.

Central Tirana, Durrës and Sarandë have paid parking, and summer evenings fill every street. Pick a hotel with its own space. Google Maps and Waze both work well, and Waze flags police checks. Download an offline map before heading into the Albanian Alps.
Insurance on Albanian Roads
Basic cover comes with the rental, but it carries an excess that you pay if the car is damaged. Some mountain and village roads are unpaved or rough, and many policies exclude tyres, glass, and the underside there. Off-Season Albania Car Rental Deals
November to April brings the lowest daily rates and the shortest queues at the desk, outside Christmas and Easter. Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër are easy to drive in winter. Snow can close the mountain roads to Theth and Valbona, so plan the Alps for summer.
May, June, September and October Suit Road Trips
These months give warm days and sea you can swim in, with rates well below summer peaks. Book two to three weeks ahead to keep your choice of cars. Riviera beaches and Alpine trails are both open, and the roads stay calmer than in August.
July and August Need an Early Booking
Demand peaks when visitors arrive and families return home, and daily rates often more than double their winter level. Automatics and 7-seat cars go first. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead for Tirana, Sarandë and Vlorë, and earlier for vans.
