Antigua and Barbuda Car Rentals: Essential Tips
Flexible Travel
Opting for a car rental in Antigua and Barbuda gives you unmatched freedom to explore this twin-island nation at your own pace. Cruise along coastal roads, visit secluded coves like Half Moon Bay, or enjoy the lively city streets of St. John’s without depending on public transport or taxis. Whether you’re planning a beach-hopping holiday or an off-grid island drive, renting a car is the best way to experience the Caribbean on your terms.
Documents for Tourists
To rent a car in Antigua and Barbuda, international visitors must present a valid passport and a valid driver's licence from their home country. If required, you'll also need a temporary local driving permit, which is usually arranged by the rental company at pickup. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, while drivers under 25 may be subject to a young driver surcharge depending on the rental provider.
Documents for Residents
Residents of Antigua and Barbuda must present a valid local driver's licence, a national ID, and proof of address when renting a vehicle. Some rental providers may request additional identification if required. These documents apply whether you're renting in St. John's or other locations across the islands.
Credit Card Requirement
A major credit card in the renter's name is typically required for all car rentals in Antigua and Barbuda. The card is used to secure the security deposit, which varies depending on the rental provider and vehicle category. While some agencies accept debit cards, credit cards are generally preferred, especially for larger or premium vehicles.
Driving Regulations
Driving in Antigua and Barbuda is on the left-hand side of the road. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants. Speed limits generally range between 20 mph and 40 mph, depending on the road and location. Road signs are in English, and drivers should always follow local traffic regulations.
Child Seat Regulations
Child safety seats are recommended for young children and may be required depending on the child's age and size. Most rental companies offer child seats and booster seats as optional extras, so it's best to request one when making your booking.
Traffic Rules
The legal blood alcohol limit (BAC) is 0.08%, although it's safest to avoid drinking before driving. Mobile phone use is prohibited unless using a hands-free device. Drivers are generally courteous, but always remain alert on winding coastal and rural roads.
Toll Roads and Fuel Costs
There are no toll roads in Antigua and Barbuda. Fuel stations are widely available across the island, particularly around St. John's and major towns. Most stations accept major credit cards, although carrying some cash is recommended when travelling to quieter areas.
Navigation and Parking
Navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze work well across the island, although some smaller villages may lack updated road data. In St. John’s and near beaches, parking is limited but generally free. Avoid parking in front of yellow curbs or in taxi-only zones to prevent fines or towing. During peak cruise ship days, expect more congestion in central areas.
Road Conditions & Insurance
Roads in Antigua are generally well-maintained, but narrow streets and occasional heavy rains can create driving challenges. It’s highly recommended to have comprehensive insurance. Be sure to confirm with your rental company what coverage is included and consider adding extra protection if necessary.

When Is the Best Time to Rent a Car in Antigua and Barbuda?
Off-Season Offers the Best Value
The off-season runs from June to November, bringing lower car rental prices and fewer tourists. While this period coincides with the Caribbean hurricane season, it is an excellent time for budget-conscious travellers who don't mind occasional tropical showers.
Shoulder Season Is Ideal for Road Trips
May and late November to early December offer warm weather, lighter traffic, and competitive rental rates. These months are perfect for exploring Antigua's beaches, coastal villages, and scenic viewpoints without the peak-season crowds.
Peak Season Brings Higher Prices
From December to April, Antigua and Barbuda experiences its busiest travel season. Demand for rental cars increases significantly during Christmas, New Year, and other major holidays, so booking 3–6 weeks in advance is recommended to secure the best rates and vehicle availability.
