Tips for Renting a Car in Georgia
Flexible Travel
Renting a car in Georgia gives you the freedom to explore vibrant cities, scenic mountain roads, historic monasteries, and the beautiful Black Sea coast without relying on public transport. Travel at your own pace from Tbilisi to Kazbegi, Batumi, Kutaisi, and beyond.
Documents for Tourists
International visitors need a valid passport and a full driver's licence from their home country. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your licence is not issued in the Roman alphabet. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old with one year of driving experience.
Documents for Residents
Georgian residents must present a valid Georgian driver's licence together with a national ID or residence permit. Some rental providers may also request proof of address.
Credit Card Requirement
A credit card in the main driver's name is usually required for the security deposit and rental payment. Debit cards may be accepted by selected suppliers but are less common.
Driving Regulations
Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Speed limits are generally 60 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 110 km/h on motorways unless otherwise posted.
Child Seat Regulations
Children under 7 years old should travel in an appropriate child restraint. Child seats and booster seats are available from most rental providers when requested during booking.
Traffic Rules
The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.03%. Mobile phones may only be used with hands-free devices while driving. Always follow local traffic regulations and speed limits to avoid fines.
Toll Roads and Fuel Costs
Georgia currently has no toll roads, making road trips across the country more affordable. Fuel stations are widely available throughout the country and accept both cash and major credit cards.
Navigation and Parking
Google Maps and other navigation apps work well across Georgia. Paid parking is common in central Tbilisi, while parking is generally easier and often free in smaller towns and tourist areas.
Driving Conditions and Insurance
Major highways are well maintained, although some mountain roads can be narrow, steep, or affected by weather conditions. Comprehensive insurance is recommended, especially if travelling through regions such as Kazbegi, Svaneti, or Tusheti.

Low Season Rentals Provide the Best Value
November through March generally offers the lowest rental prices outside the ski holiday period. It's a great time to explore Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and cultural attractions while enjoying quieter roads and lower accommodation costs.
Spring and Autumn Are Ideal for Road Trips
April to June and September to October provide pleasant temperatures, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds. These months are perfect for driving through Kakheti's wine region, Kazbegi, and the Georgian countryside.
Summer Brings the Highest Rental Demand
June through August is Georgia's busiest travel season, particularly around Batumi, Gudauri, and the Caucasus Mountains. Booking your rental car well in advance helps secure better prices and wider vehicle availability.
