Documents for Tourists

Tourists must have a valid passport and a driver’s license from their home country. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if the license isn’t in English, and a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) may be required.

Residents must present a valid Australian driver’s license that has been held for at least one year. Proof of identity, such as a passport or government-issued ID, may also be required for verification.

Credit Card Requirement

A credit card in the renter’s name is required for the deposit and payment, ensuring a smooth rental process. Debit cards may be accepted, but credit cards are preferred.

Driving Regulations

Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Drivers must keep left, with speeds from 40–60 km/h in cities and up to 110 km/h on highways. Mobile use is hands-free only, and drinking and driving is prohibited.

Child Seat Regulations

Front seats are allowed only if the car seat is approved. Children under 6 months use a rear-facing seat, 6 months to under 4 years a forward-facing harness seat, and 4 to under 7 years a booster or suitable restraint.

Traffic Rules

At unmarked intersections, vehicles from the right have priority. Drivers must follow the give-way and stop signs and yield to pedestrians. In roundabouts, traffic moves counterclockwise, with vehicles inside having right-of-way.

Toll Roads and Fuel Costs

In the Sunshine Coast, there are no toll roads, so travellers can drive freely without extra fees. Fuel is widely available at self-service stations across the region, with prices varying by location but generally affordable compared to major cities.
