What to Know Before You Rent a Car on Grand Cayman

Collecting Your Car

After you land at Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM), clear customs, pick up your bags, and walk to the arrivals exit. A Final Rentals team member waits near the car rental area. Bring your home driving licence, your passport, and a credit card in the main driver's name. A photo or phone copy is not enough.

Papers and the Temporary Cayman Driving Permit

Visitors need a temporary Cayman Islands driving permit, plus their home licence. IDP is not required. You pay a small fee for it, and Final Rentals helps you get it at the rental desk when you pick up the car. Always keep your permit, licence, rental papers, and passport with you in the car.

Credit Card Rule

The rental company holds a deposit on your credit card at pickup. It is usually between USD $250 and $600, based on the car and insurance you pick. You get the money back after you return the car. Cash, debit cards, and prepaid cards do not work for this deposit.

Child Seat Rules

Young children must ride in a proper child seat or booster that fits their size. Final Rentals can supply a safe, approved seat. Ask for it when you book online, and it will be ready when you arrive.

Driving Rules and Traffic Rules

In the Cayman Islands, you drive on the LEFT side of the road. Many cars here have the steering wheel on the left, like cars in the USA, so be extra careful at turns and roundabouts. Speed signs use miles per hour (mph). It is about 25 mph (40 km/h) in towns and about 40 mph (65 km/h) on most roads, so follow the signs. The alcohol limit is about 0.10%, but the safest rule is not to drink and drive. Everyone must wear a seatbelt. Do not hold a phone while driving.

Roads, Animals, and Parking

Grand Cayman's main roads are paved and easy to follow. Rush hour traffic can be slow near George Town and Seven Mile Beach. Watch for chickens and iguanas on the road, and slow down at busy roundabouts. Beach parking is usually free, but never leave bags or valuables in the car.

No Toll Roads, and Fuel Costs

The Cayman Islands have no toll roads. Fuel costs about USD $1.30 to $1.60 per liter, and it is often sold by the gallon. Gas stations are easy to find on Grand Cayman, and the island is small, so your fuel costs stay low.

Insurance and CDW

Every car comes with basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Cover. If the car gets damaged, you pay a set amount first. This is called the excess. Tight parking lots and sandy beach roads can cause small damage. We suggest Super CDW (Zero Excess) so you worry less. Ask us about tire and glass coverage too.

Age Rules for Renting

You usually need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car in the Cayman Islands. Drivers under 25 may pay a young driver fee of about USD $10 to $20 per day. Bigger cars and Jeeps may require drivers who are 25 years old. Please ask us before you book.

Staying on Grand Cayman

Rental cars must stay on Grand Cayman. There is no car ferry to Cayman Brac or Little Cayman, so you cannot take the car there. If your flight is late, we usually keep your car for one to two hours. Book a few weeks early, mainly from December to April, for a better price.

FAQs About Owen Roberts International Airport Car Rental

Where do I collect my rental car at Owen Roberts Airport?

Rental cars are available near Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) on Grand Cayman, with collection locations a short walk across the road from the terminal. Follow directional signs after arrivals and confirm the precise office or handover point in your reservation. Allow time for paperwork, vehicle inspection, and child-seat fitting before leaving the airport, especially during busy arrival periods.

How far is Owen Roberts Airport from George Town and Seven Mile Beach?

Owen Roberts International Airport is located in George Town on Grand Cayman. George Town’s central area is only a short drive away, while Seven Mile Beach is farther north along the island’s main road. Journey times depend on traffic and your hotel’s exact location. A rental car makes it easier to reach beaches, restaurants, and attractions beyond central George Town.

What is the minimum age to hire a car at Owen Roberts Airport?

Rental companies in the Cayman Islands commonly require drivers to be at least 21, and some vehicle categories may have higher age limits. A young-driver surcharge or minimum licence-holding period may apply. Maximum-age conditions also vary by provider. Check the specific terms before booking, and enter each driver’s age accurately to avoid collection problems or unexpected charges at the counter.

What documents do I need to rent a car at Owen Roberts Airport?

Bring your original valid driving licence, passport or accepted identification, booking confirmation, and a payment card that meets the rental agreement. The main driver may need to present a card in their own name for the deposit. Requirements can differ by licence-issuing country and provider, so confirm documents before departure and keep them available when collecting your vehicle in person.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in the Cayman Islands?

An International Driving Permit is not automatically required for every visitor. Cayman Islands rules allow some visitors to drive using a valid domestic licence, depending on the licence’s issuing country and applicable convention. Rental providers may set additional conditions. Check guidance from the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing before travel, and carry your original licence regardless when driving.

What insurance should I choose for a rental car at Owen Roberts Airport?

Rental agreements may include required third-party liability protection and offer optional collision damage or theft protection. Read the exclusions and excess carefully; glass, tyres, underbody damage, keys, and negligent driving may be treated differently. Ask what insurance is included in the quoted price and whether additional coverage changes the deposit. Keep the agreement and emergency contact details in the car.

How much does it cost to rent a car at Owen Roberts Airport?

Prices at Owen Roberts Airport vary by season, vehicle, insurance, and booking lead time. For planning, allow roughly US$15–45 per day, US$105–315 weekly, or US$450–1,350 monthly for a basic car before extras. These are broad estimates, not live quotes; peak winter demand and added coverage can raise costs. Compare the total price and cancellation terms before paying online at checkout.

Which economy cars are best for exploring Grand Cayman?

An economy or compact car is often sufficient for Grand Cayman’s paved main roads, beach visits, and town parking. Models such as a Mitsubishi Mirage, Kia compact, or similar may be offered, but exact vehicles are not guaranteed. Check luggage capacity and air conditioning, especially in hot weather. Reserve an automatic transmission if needed, and verify availability in your category.

Should I choose an SUV or minivan for a family holiday in Grand Cayman?

An SUV or minivan can suit families carrying beach equipment, several suitcases, or travelling with children. Grand Cayman’s main roads are generally paved, so four-wheel drive is not normally necessary for ordinary tourist routes. Choose based on passenger space, comfort, and parking needs rather than size alone. Confirm child-seat availability and boot capacity before booking your vehicle and child equipment.

What driving rules should tourists know in the Cayman Islands?

Drivers in the Cayman Islands travel on the left, and roundabouts are common. Observe posted speed limits, wear seat belts, and keep children in suitable restraints. Grand Cayman has no toll-road network, but traffic can build around George Town and popular beach areas. Watch for cyclists and pedestrians, avoid using a handheld phone, and never drive after drinking any alcohol.

Are fuel stations easy to find near Owen Roberts Airport?

Fuel stations are available around Grand Cayman, particularly near George Town and along major routes. Before leaving the airport, check whether the vehicle uses petrol or diesel and understand the return fuel policy. A full-to-full arrangement means refuelling before drop-off. Keep enough fuel for island drives, and allow time to find a station near the airport before returning the vehicle.

What is the best time of year to rent a car in Owen Roberts International Airport?

Grand Cayman stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures around 26°C in January and close to 30°C in summer. December to April is generally drier and popular with visitors, while the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November. Rain can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Check forecasts and official alerts before longer drives during unsettled weather conditions.
